starters were excellent
"Overall a pleasant experience. A live singer was nice but a bit too loud for such a small restaurant as this. When we were arrived we were given pre-dinner champagne and olives and sat near the bar on some comfy couches. Service was very quick and our waiter and maitre de were very friendly and accommodating. Crab risotto for starters was excellent; the chicken mains good". (Source:

Cool hotel on the beach - great food too
Stayed here for two nights and was really impressed with the Sandgate. The main benefits are the location right on a lovely beach by the channel, and some rooms have a terrace to sit out and enjoy this. My terrace wasn't huge but was a nice surprise to relax on after the journey. The rooms are quite funky with cool style wallpaper and chairs and there was an open fire in the bar which was nice. Best thing was the food though, especially a superb ham hock starter and a brilliant cheese board which was seriously high quality. Ideal for young couples - highly recommended for everyone else A+" (Source:

"Excellent hotel. Rooms funky...Excellent hotel. Rooms funky and stylish, with lovely balcony where you can watch the sea. Staff very friendly and accomodating. Food is good and ate sat on the terrace right by the sea. Only problem is no dedicated parking but lots of parking on the road outside so not that serious" (Source:

"A Very Pleasant Experience
We stayed here for two nights whilst attending a wedding locally. The accommodation cost us 80 pound per night for a twin room (myself and my dad). Overall, our experience was extremely pleasant. The room, whilst small, was clean, and had been modernised as much as possible (LCD TV, modern furniture etc.). The building is old, so you need to be appreciative of this fact, and credit the management for doing all that they can to make the hotel as pleasant as possible. I think they have succeeded, and we would stay here again if travelling nearby. The hotel is right on the 'beach' so the views if you have a front facing room are beautiful. Given the location and the standard of other accommodation in the area (from what I have heard) this hotel is an excellant choice! I have no hesitation in recommending it positively". "Good location, friendly service
Went for a weekend away here after seeing it well reviewed in the Guardian - thought hotel was in a very good location, especially in the sunshine (as with last weekend ) as it has rooms and terrace that overlook the beach, and the chance to sit out and soak up the sun . Food is also very, very good, with seriously excellent lamb and brownies, except for the breakfast croissants which I thought were a bit charred! Rooms are smallish but adequate, and were clean and nicely decorated. Service very friendly. Parking not perfect as on the road outside but we didn't have any problems on our stay. Would come again as felt very welcome and had a good time". (Source Trip Advisor)
"Sooooo lovely!
Around Christmas my wife and I were visiting from California, and we stayed at the Sandgate for several nights. The rooms were wonderful, warm, and cozy. The staff was not only efficient, but good company as well. Every morning we'd have breakfast outside, right across from the beach". (Source Trip Advisor)
"Avant garden of England
...bare feet on wooden slats, elbows resting on wrought-iron railings, we sip gin and tonics on our veranda at The Sandgate hotel as the silvery sea sucks on the shingle and Dungeness power station glows beyond. Downstairs, dinner includes deliciously squirting goose egg and local Romney Marsh lamb, and we watch the pink of the horizon gradually darken to black-blue beyond the restaurant's vast windows".
